At Lakeside Youth Association we believe every child should have the opportunity, motivation, and access to play sports—regardless of their ability to play or ability to pay. Research shows that participating in youth sports can lead to immediate and long-term benefits for youth, their families, and the community. 80 percent of parents believe
that sports helped their child learn about discipline and dedication, as well as how to get along with others. We believe that sports can provides children with an outlet, ability to burn energy, character development opportunities, strengthens muscles and bones, a social circle, and how to work within a team.
"'Coach Chief'. That's what everybody calls him," said Jacqueline Ramsey who nominated Elmer Leak for Pay it Forward. For the past five years, Coach Chief has been teaching Jacqueline Ramsey's now 11-year-old son lessons on and off the field.
"I'm trying not to cry right now, but he's a sweetheart," said Ramsey.
Leak has helped countless kids during his roughly two-decade tenure as the President of Lakeside's Youth Association.
"He tries to keep the kids off the street and keep them busy and active. I just love him," said Ramsey.
No matter their background or ability, kids are able to play baseball, basketball and football under the program Leak leads.
"He does everything. Like if the kids don't have enough money or whatever to pay for their uniforms, he'll pay for them out of his pocket," said Ramsey.
